Spartan Soldiers

I found many things interesting in our first reading assignment but to read that the Spartan boys leave home at the age of seven shocked me. Spending your childhood basically learning to be a Soldier. They "played" competitive games until they were eighteen and then spent four years getting military training. They must have had an exteremly strong military. I can't imagine having a child leave home at the age of seven. It had to have been hard on the child as well as the parents. To me eighteen seemed to young to join the military and nine weeks of training not long enough. Of course if you ask my Son he will tell you different. The child that I see is now considered a Soldier. They do go through a grueling training period but is it enough? What if he started younger like the Spartan boys? Would that make a difference? We will never know. I can only hope that he is prepared. I am sure that the Spartan parents were proud of their childern and so am I.

I agree, seven years old is very early to leave home to begin training to fight. It seems like such a wasted life. Their life was about one thing only and they did not get to enjoy anything else. I'm sure it was great for the strength and skill of their army, but as far as each individual person, it's just too much to be forced into. Unlike today where we have the choice whether to join or not, and that is not until 18 years of age. I think that by having the choice to join makes it better because the people who are in want to be there, but certainly 9 weeks of basic training (it was only 8 when I was in), doesn't feel like enough time to prepare for a war. But it seems to be working out ok so I do think what we have now is better than what the Spartans had. Although the times certainly are different. Your son's service is appreciated. I'm sure you are proud of him.

I agree, seven years old is very early to leave home, or at least your mother. My understanding is that the young men, boys are there with their with their fathers, uncles, brothers. There are nurtured by the men within the tribe, and are still taken care of in a atmosphere that promotes growth for boys. Considering war was such a major part of there life it was necessary for survival to be taught from a early age.

If our society could teach such discipline necessary for survival I don't think we would have the problems we have today with the gangs and violence we have with today's youth. That would require fathers, uncles, brothers, grandfathers all to take part in raising our young boys. I don't see that happening.

Thanks for the service of those who do stand up and teach and are of service to the United States. You are appreciated.
